Maybe it's a cold weather thing, but I am once again reminded of the immense pleasure and comfort in cooking deeply delicious and warming food while the kids are tucked sweetly in bed and the kitchen is filled with music and fragrant smells. Right this very moment, various geometric forms composing a succulent beef stew ~ in the perfect hues of crunchy bright autumn leaves ~ are simmering gloriously in the brilliantly orange dutch oven, ready to feed a hungry army of four tomorrow evening while I am at the gym manwrestling, and my heart and nethers are tripping and flipping to the sultry moodiness of some classic, lush, and kinky Interpol.
(The following track comes from the b-side of the double-disc set of Antics, which we've owned forever and never even knew existed until a roadtrip this weekend when I went rummaging through the glove compartment for CD's and found this killer song, my newest breathsucking musical addiction. Plus, the lyrical and elevated bassline starting at 2:04 must make Peter Hook proud, and warms the cockles of this New Order devoteé.)
Sometimes, through filling your space with immeasurable pleasure, lovely company, and sensual activity, you can't help but sigh deeply and feel, as Roethke writes, lovely in your bones.
(photo credit: the above photo is lifted shamelessly from Cook's Illustrated's site, whose recipe for "The Best Beef Stew" is currently filling the house with mouthwatering scents. Exciting to think that tomorrow, it's going to taste even more savoury than it smells now!)
